Houston's Tax Hike: Confiscation Disguised as Public Service
The Houston Mayor and council members have put forward a proposal for a 4.5% property tax rate increase, ostensibly to 'fund municipal infrastructure expansions' Houston Budget. Let us be clear: this is not 'funding'; this is confiscation. It is a blatant act of legal plunder, where the state, using the force of law, extracts wealth from its productive citizens to serve its own burgeoning ambitions.
Property owners are understandably expressing concerns over rising living expenses and, quite rightly, municipal budget bloat. Every additional dollar extorted in property taxes means less money for families, less capital for investment, and less individual liberty. The pretense of 'public good' masks the coercive transfer of wealth from private hands to the government coffers. This is precisely the kind of systemic theft that Bastiat warned against, where the law, instead of protecting property, is used to violate it.
This trend of governments increasing their take is pervasive. Look no further than El Paso, where the City Council has just approved a 10% increase in all residential renovation permitting fees El Paso Fees. These fees, much like property taxes, are arbitrary burdens on homeowners, demanding tribute merely for the right to improve one's own property. Whether it's a tax hike or a fee increase, the underlying principle is the same: government growing fat at the expense of individual prosperity. You Don't Hate Government Enough.
