Staff Report & Agenda Item Details

This item approves the disposal of three (3) Police Department vehicles, specifically, a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 2010 Dodge Ram truck, and a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe, through America's Auto Auction, formerly EBlock Houston. The department has decommissioned the vehicles and proposes their disposal through services provided by America's Auto Auction. Costs associated with keeping vehicles suitable for service are high, thus, making the most cost-effective solution that of auction. The units have been replaced through the Vehicle Replacement Fund. The vehicles will be decommissioned per the standards set by Local Government Code, Section 272.006 "Sale or Transfer of Law Enforcement Vehicle," which includes the removal of any equipment or insignia that could mislead a reasonable person to believe that the vehicle is a law enforcement motor vehicle. Auction proceeds from the vehicle sales will be recorded in the City's Vehicle Replacement Fund to help offset the cost of future vehicle purchase(s).

Bastiat Liberty & Property Rights Analysis

This motion is scored as EXPANDS_GOVERNMENT (Impact Weight: 2.0/10). Under the Bastiat Liberty Watchdog Index, measures that increase tax rates or fee schedules, issue new debt or Certificates of Obligation, expand regulatory/zoning restrictions on private land use, or authorize unbudgeted spending expansions reduce an official's Freedom Score when voted YES (and reward dissenting NO votes).
