Staff Report & Agenda Item Details

Pursuant to Section 102.007(c) of the Texas Local Government Code, the City Council must take a separate vote to ratify the property tax increase reflected in the budget since the budget will require raising more revenue from property taxes than in the previous year.  This vote is separate and distinct from the vote adopting the budget and the vote on the tax rate required by Chapter 26 of the Texas Tax Code.

Bastiat Liberty & Property Rights Analysis

This motion is scored as EXPANDS_GOVERNMENT (Impact Weight: 2.8/10). Under the Bastiat Liberty Watchdog Index, measures that increase tax rates or fee schedules, issue new debt or Certificates of Obligation, expand regulatory/zoning restrictions on private land use, or authorize unbudgeted spending expansions reduce an official's Freedom Score when voted YES (and reward dissenting NO votes).
