Staff Report & Agenda Item Details
Art in Uncommon Places is a local organization that works with area artists to create and install artwork in public and private spaces throughout the community. The organization has partnered with the City on previous public art projects and is proposing two new installations on City property. The projects are intended to expand opportunities for local artists while adding distinctive public art to community spaces. The first proposed installation, “Not as Small as They Seem,” consists of eight large-scale sculptural mosaiced insects proposed for placement along the Red Arroyo Trail near the intersection of College Hills Boulevard and Millbrook Drive. The colorful, highly patterned sculptures depict familiar insects at an exaggerated scale and are intended to complement the trail setting while encouraging viewers to consider the natural environment from a different perspective. The second proposed installation, “Stacked Stories of West Texas,” consists of nine artistic totems proposed for placement along Chadbourne Street, beginning near the intersection with Beauregard Avenue and extending north to Fifth Street. The installation would add a series of public art elements along the Chadbourne Street corridor and contribute to the visual character of the area. As with previous projects involving Art in Uncommon Places, the City and the organization would enter into an agreement addressing the creation, installation, placement, and ongoing maintenance of the artwork. Approval of the proposed resolution would authorize the placement of the two installations on City property and allow the projects to proceed in accordance with the terms of that agreement. If adopted, this resolution would authorize the City Manager to negotiate and execute any needed agreements with Art in Uncommon Places to implement the project.
