Staff Report & Agenda Item Details

The Friendswood Police Department is grateful to receive a Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Grant in the amount of $64,688 from the Office of the Governor's Public Safety Office Grant Programs to replace their rifle-resistant hard armor plates. When used in conjunction with the current soft body armor, these new plates will provide officers with rifle-resistant protection consistent with state and national best practices. Following the notice to discontinue use of the existing plates, this grant is especially welcomed and will provide an important enhancement to the protection we can provide our officers. Through the grant, the City is eligible to purchase 47 sets, or 94 rifle-resistant plates, which will allow us to outfit our personnel with this additional level of protection. This is a significant investment in the safety of our officers, and we are very excited that we were able to secure these funds without having to rely solely on our department budget.

Bastiat Liberty & Property Rights Analysis

This motion is scored as EXPANDS_GOVERNMENT (Impact Weight: 2.8/10). Under the Bastiat Liberty Watchdog Index, measures that increase tax rates or fee schedules, issue new debt or Certificates of Obligation, expand regulatory/zoning restrictions on private land use, or authorize unbudgeted spending expansions reduce an official's Freedom Score when voted YES (and reward dissenting NO votes).
