Presentation and Discussion Regarding a Mid-Year Update from the San Antonio River Authority's Education and Engagement Department
Staff Report & Agenda Item Details
The San Antonio River Authority’s Education and Engagement Team will provide a mid‑year update highlighting activities and accomplishments from the spring semester of the 2025–2026 school year, as well as key community engagement efforts conducted this spring. Education Team Update The education portion of the presentation will review spring semester programming, including field trips, in‑class instruction, and educator partnerships focused on watershed science, conservation, and river stewardship. Staff will share participation metrics, outcomes, and examples of student learning across the basin. In addition, the team will discuss planning efforts underway for the 2026–2027 school year, including curriculum enhancements. A key highlight will be the development of the Floods Don’t Care Initiative, which is being explored for inclusion in next year’s curriculum to support the NextGen Flood Warning System. This initiative aims to strengthen students’ understanding of flood risk, preparedness, and the role of technology in protecting communities. Engagement Team Update The engagement update will focus on spring community events and outreach initiatives, including a recap of Earth Week activities and results from the City Nature Challenge, showcasing community participation, data collected, and regional impact. Staff will also highlight other seasonal initiatives that supported environmental awareness, volunteerism, and connection to the river system. The presentation will include an overview of ongoing and emerging volunteer opportunities, including a brief update on the River Warriors program and a discussion of a potential River Warrior Jr. program currently under consideration. This proposed program would create age-appropriate opportunities for younger participants to engage in river clean‑ups and environmental stewardship alongside supervised activities. Overall, the presentation will provide the Board of Directors with an opportunity to reflect on progress made during the spring, assess community impact, and preview upcoming priorities for education and engagement efforts moving into the next school year.
